Ponds Walk with Jack Nisbet

This walk will begin at the Dishman Hills entrance on Park and 8^th Ave. We will combine the Pond and Nimbus Knob Loop Trails in order to look at different habitats and shaded seasonal ponds hidden among the hills. Along the way we will compare what we see with the landscape that naturalist David Douglas encountered when he explored the Spokane area in 1826.

The trail is rocky, some sections might be hot, and the hike will last 2-3 hours. We will adjust our route to fit the weather and the participants, but bring sunscreen, water, and snacks.

Teacher and naturalist Jack Nisbet is the author of several books that explore the human and natural history of the Northwest, including award-winning biographies of fur agent David Thompson and horticultural collector David Douglas.

Nisbet’s most recent title, Ancient Places, is a cycle of stories about people and phenomena that helped to shape the landscape of our region. After reading it, Jess Walter said “I can think of no better guide to this corner of the West.”
