    with Michelle Pearson

This event will contain a presentation including a broad introduction to fungal organisms as well as some local details about mushrooms and locally occurring fungal species. Mushroom identification will be broadly discussed, and there will be time for questions and conversation.

Foraging is not permitted within the Dishman Hills.

Michelle Pearson is faculty in the Life Sciences department at Spokane Falls Community College (SFCC) and teaches several classes, including Mycology. She attended both SFCC and Eastern Washington University and earned her PhD in Cellular and Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Michelle's scientific work focused on the interactions between plants and their symbiotic fungal partners. In her free time, she enjoys finding, identifying, and foraging mushrooms.

Laughter Yoga with Instructor Ganna Ainsworth

    Happy World Laughter Day!

    Please register.

Laughter Yoga was founded in 1995. Being a relatively new style of yoga, it incorporates breathing and mindfulness, which is present in ancient styles of yoga, such as hatha yoga. Laughter Yoga doesn’t require a mat, because there are no asanas. Instead, we will practicing deep belly laughter, silliness, and engagement of your imagination and creativity, and mindful breathing. You will need water, as laughter yoga is similar to a cardio exercise, or a lawn chair if you have difficulty standing. Usually, Laughter Yoga is practiced standing up in a circle.

It is amazing to drop your inhibitions and laugh without a reason, and the laughter exercises will help you have an amazing time! No jokes are told, and there are no comedians, but you will have the deepest and most sustained laughter for no reason! Laughter yoga has been shown to bring a slew of positive psychological and physiological benefits - it boosts immune function, helps with chronic pain, improves mood, decreases blood pressure, and even changes personality if practiced regularly.

Ganna Ainsworth was certified as a Laughter Yoga leader back when she lived in Nashville in 2011. Since then, she led classes in Nashville and later in Chattanooga, TN, until 2018 when she became a mom. She is excited to share the gift of laughter in the amazing Spokane area.

By participating in Laughter Yoga class, you agree to have a video or picture taken of you in this class, which could be used for future Laughter Yoga events.

Event will be weather dependent. Registrants will be notified.

    Stevens Creek Bird Hike

    with Jon Isacoff

Members only. Those not registered will be turned away.

Stevens Creek is among the best places in Spokane to hear a diversity of singing migrant songbirds. Sometimes we see them too! Come join us for an early morning hike while learning about bird songs and notes.

Meet in Stevens Creek Parking lot at 6AM.  We will hike to Big Rock and back and see and listen to bird songs.  With luck we should observe 20 or more species of songbirds, though more will be heard than seen in this wooded location.

Hike will be approximately 2.2 miles and 2 hours.

Though we will be traveling at a slow to moderate pace, the trail will be steep in places and hiking poles may be helpful.

Binoculars are recommended! Please come dressed for weather and bring snacks, water, and bug spray. It still tends to be chilly in the mornings and it is tic season.

Unfortunately, this is not a hike for dogs. Please park at the Stevens Creek Trailhead at 9102 Stevens Creek Rd, Spokane Valley.

We're asking our supporters to help us make the most of this incredible opportunity. Every vote counts to help us receive a portion of the available Target funds as we continue our mission to connect and protect the Dishman Hills.

Don't forget, as you earn more votes, you can keep voting multiple times during the campaign!

Thank you for your support, and we encourage you to share your support for us (and your thanks to Target) on social media throughout the duration of the voting!
